Best Santorini, Greece Vacation: Taking the Plunge Into Spectacular Island Beauty.

The Greek Island of Santorini has become one of the world’s most sought after holiday destinations and it is easy to see why. With its crystal blue waters, rugged cliffs, white washed buildings, fascinating history and sensational cuisine, Santorini offers an unforgettable getaway. Nestled away in the Aegean Sea and only accessible via boat, Santorini offers a unique and spectacular experience.

First and foremost, it is important to understand the geographical details of Santorini. The island is located in the Cyclades islands of the Aegean Sea, about 200 km southeast of mainland Greece and is formed by a group of 4 volcanic islands together with the largest one, Thira. Santorini is approximately 12 km2 and its terrain ranges from Theia to the east and Akrotiri near the southernmost tip of the island. It is worth noting that the destruction of the original Minoan town of Akrotiri in the 16th century BC gave Santorini its unique and mesmerizing landscape that is both a blessing and a curiosity to visitors of the island.

This paradise is filled with amazement with plenty of things to explore. Touring around the island makes for a fun and interesting experience, with awesome photo opportunities. There are plenty of tours available to choose from and you can explore the many beaches and coves, with something to appeal to everyone: from the famous black beach of Perissa to the famous Red Beach near Akrotiri, known for its reddish hue due to minerals in the sea. Apart from these exotic beaches, visitors can also explore old churches and iconic ancient sites.

In addition to its regional history, the cuisine of Santorini is highly acclaimed. Olives, feta, tomatoes, and little salty cheese pies – all topped with a twinkle of oregano – are among the signature dishes of Santorini. This unique experience is best enjoyed at any of the many vine-clad tavernas, whilst admiring the beautiful sunset over the Aegean Sea.

Santorini also plays an important role for wine-lovers. The island is home to some of the oldest wineries in the world, with many of them being open to the public for tours and tastings. Exploring the vineyards is a unique opportunity to learn more about the local wine-making history and traditions.

Accommodation in Santorini comes in the form of resort’s and luxury villas which typically have private pools – the perfect way to relax after a day of sight-seeing and exploration. Taking a leisurely cruise around the island is also a great way to take in the breathtaking views and some of Santorini’s most iconic sites.

For a holiday that truly has it all, Santorini is the ultimate destination. From its breathtaking beauty, to its rich cultural heritage, and delicious cuisine, Santorini is a must-see island that will merges two worlds – the past and the present – into an experience that will linger in the memory for years to come.
