Cusco has been an important city in Peru for many centuries, and it served as the capital of the Inca Empire in the 15th century. Although much of the ancient city was destroyed when the Spanish conquerors arrived, there are still numerous archaeological sites to explore. The ancient city of Cusco encapsulates the history and traditions of the Inca faring almost intact until today. One of its most famous sites is the Templo del Sol, an Incan temple located on a hill overlooking the city, which is thought to be the political center of the civilization.

No trip to Cusco would be complete without exploring the ruins of nearby Sacred Valley, a stunningly beautiful area at the base of the Peruvian Andes. The stretch of rustic villages, farmland and verdant rainbow-coloured terraces is home to some of the region’s most spectacular Incan ruins. Visiting these ruins is a unique experience that should not be missed. Some highlights are the incredible terracing in Pisac, the Agricultural Terraces of Moray, and the impressive Incan fortress of Ollantaytambo.

Cusco is also the perfect destination for nature lovers, offering spectacular landscapes, flora, and fauna. Although it is situated at an altitude of 3300 metres (10,817 feet), Cusco boasts a mild and temperate climate ideal for activities such as trekking and mountain biking. Other activities include exploring the Amazon rainforest, rafting, canyoning, and hot air ballooning.

Beyond exploring the ruins and visiting the Sacred Valley, Cusco offers a wide range of activities to enjoy. Even the most foodie-inclined are bound to find something to tantalise their tastebuds. From traditional Peruvian Andean foods to more contemporary international cuisine, the city has something for everyone. Bustling with energy and radiating with vibrant hues, there’s no doubt that this ancient city captures the hearts of any visitor.
