“Glimpsing Heaven: How Santorini, Greece Takes Visitor’s Breath Away.”

Ah, Santorini—the very mention of the name conjures up images of breathtaking sunsets, crystal-clear blue waters, and charming little white buildings cascading down the volcano’s bright red cliffs. It’s no wonder why Santorini is one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Greece; from the luxurious resorts to local specialties at quaint restaurants, this unique island certainly knows how to make an impression.

Santorini is part of an archipelago in the famous Cyclades islands, and despite its small size of only 75 square miles, it offers plenty for visitors to explore. Of course, it’s the iconic views of the picturesque villages along the craggy cliffs that draw the majority of visitors to the island. This whitewashed-style of buildings, called “cave houses,” were actually first built to protect locals from pirate invasions in the past. But as Santorini became more popular with tourists, many of the buildings were transformed into quaint hotels and small restaurants offering traditional Greek cuisine.

To really gain some perspective, head over to the edge of the cliff to explore the ruins of the grand Venetian castle, perched above the beautiful, aquamarine-hued waters. The castle of Akrotiri, also known as Skaros, is thought to have traditionally defended the main settlement on the island. From here, you can admire the winding streets of Fira, Oia and Imerovigli, scattered with various shops, restaurants and churches, all framed by the bright blue of the Aegean Sea.

Santorini may have put itself on the tourist map with its dreamy views, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to explore and do on the island, too. Take a boat ride and partake in some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in the area. You’ll find yourself swimming among vibrantly colored sea life, shimmering coral and water-worn rock formations in all shapes and sizes.

When you’re not out and about, there is plenty of opportunity to indulge in some retail therapy. As you stroll through the narrow cobbled-stone streets in Fira or Oia, you’ll find plenty of shops offering beautiful handmade jewelry, pottery and art. For something authentic, spend a day exploring the Boutari Winery in Megalochori. Or head to Oia to take the picturesque 2 km hike in the remains of the Ancient Minoan city of Thira.

With its stunning views, great food, and cultural and historical attractions, Santorini has become one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Mediterranean. Offering an array of experiences, from white-sand beaches to thrilling hikes, any traveler would be hard-pressed not to fall in love with this idyllic Greek paradise. From the moment you arrive, you’ll understand why Santorini is considered the gem of the Mediterranean, and you’ll be filled with the joy of discovering a secret stretch of heaven.
