Kilimanjaro, Serengeti, and Zanzibar: Tanzania’s Best-Kept Secrets

Kilimanjaro, Serengeti, and Zanzibar: Tanzania’s Best-Kept Secrets.

Tanzania is known for its spectacular wildlife, natural beauty, and hospitality. However, few people know about the ultimate Tanzanian paradise: Zanzibar. Sitting off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar is a tropical island retreat made up of picturesque beaches, inviting turquoise waters and an array of historical landmarks. From its excellent snorkeling spots to its vibrant local markets, Zanzibar is a must-see destination for anyone looking to immerse themselves in African culture.

The coastal city of Zanzibar is the entry point to the island, and visitors can take a dhow (traditional boat) or a plane to get to the outer regions. The historical centre of Stone Town is full of energetic streets, vibrant markets, beautiful Indian-style mosques and ancient buildings. The town is deeply connected to its Arabic and Indian influences, showing in local cuisine and the architecture. Visitors can explore the narrow winding alleys, sample exotic spices, and marvel at the beautiful architecture of the 19th-century buildings.

Heading south, the beaches of Zanzibar are perhaps the biggest draw for visitors. From the tranquil sands of Nungwi and Kendwa in the north, to the famed Paje beach in the south, the beaches unite travellers from all over the world – with something to suit everyone’s taste. The islands are renowned for their snorkeling and diving spots, with plenty of opportunities to explore the depths of the Indian Ocean. Those wishing to be more adventurous can head out to Prison Island, a wildlife conservation located off the coast of Zanzibar. Take out a kayak or paddleboard to get closer to the giant tortoises that graze there or stay at two of the backpackers’ favourite beaches, Jambiani and Paje.

There are several other interesting attractions in Zanzibar, including its atmospheric coral-stone fortresses, botanical gardens and spice markets. Jozani Forest is one of the top locations to head to to see the endangered red colobus monkeys. Taking up half the island of Unguja, spice farms are a great spot to learn about the history of spices and explore the plantations.

What’s great about Zanzibar is that certain tranquil areas provide opportunities for relaxation, while others provide thrilling experiences like kitesurfing. The laid-back vibe and a mix of cultures from around the world provide a unique atmosphere that can’t be found anywhere else in Tanzania. People go to Zanzibar not only to have vacations, but also to retreat from the outside world and relax in the gorgeous surroundings.

Whether you’re looking for a place to get away for weeks on end or just wanting to spend a few days in paradise, Zanzibar is the perfect destination for an unforgettable Tanzanian experience. Despite its fame, Zanzibar remains one of Africa’s best-kept secrets, and we can’t recommend it enough!
