“The Ancient City of Cusco – Exploring the Story Behind Peru’s Inca Capital.”

Cusco is a popular destination for travelers from all over the world. Nestled high in the Andes Mountains of Peru, Cusco is the former capital of the Incan Empire, a region that is known for its stunning beauty, vibrant culture, and centuries-old history. Those visiting Cusco can explore the colorful streets filled with rich history, appreciate local cuisine and take part in popular activities such as hiking, biking, and sightseeing.

The city’s history dates back to around 1100 AD, when it was founded by the Incas as their capital. Over the years, the city was destroyed and rebuilt several times, resulting in a mix of Incan and Spanish architecture that you can still see today. Perhaps the most famous sights in the city are the Inca walls and temples, including the ancient Temple of the Sun, the Coricancha, built around the year 1400.

Today, Cusco is home to a wide array of cultural and historic sites, as well as a vibrant nightlife, with plenty of music and dance venues. Visitors can explore the sprawling Plaza de Armas, the main square in the city, take a tour of the colourful San Blas neighbourhood, and learn about Incan customs and culture with a visit to the Incan Museum. Shopping is also popular in Cusco; head to San Pedro market for some bartering or visit the art galleries to pick up some unique souvenirs.

Nature lovers can take advantage of Cusco’s proximity to the stunning Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, Peru’s famed “Lost City of the Incas”. With hikes of all difficulty levels, this stunning valley is an excellent destination for beginner and experienced trekkers alike. Hiking the famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is an especially rewarding experience but book early – spaces do sell out!

A trip to Cusco isn’t complete without trying some local cuisine. Uchu, or potatoes, are the staple of a traditional Cusco meal, and are commonly served alongside fish, meat, stew, or even guinea pig, known as cuy. Make sure you leave room for some chicha morada, a sweet, purple corn beverage, to complete the experience.

Overall, Cusco offers something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a cultural experience, an adventurous hike, or just to while away the time among the colorful streets and relaxed atmosphere. So pack your bags and come explore the amazing attractions in the one-time capital of the Incan Empire.
